How VoIP worksSign up now - Fixed line versus Voice Over IP
Fixed line phones systems
Fixed line telephone systems, the type you most likely have in your home, use a phone that is connected to a fixed, copper line. The other end of this line is connected to a local exchange, which in turn is connected to your telephone company; for example BT.
When you place a call, your phone sends a request down the copper line to the local exchange and the exchange then routes your call appropriately. Similarly, when you are called, the call is routed to your phone company who then route the call on to your exchange, connecting the call to you on your copper line to the exchange.
You may have a more complex set up, such as ISDN (if you have multiple lines) and perhaps even a local PBX (phone system) in your office. Ultimately, the principles are more or less the same.
Voice over IP
Voice over IP phone systems operate using an Internet connection, rather than using the copper wire connection to your exchange directly.
Your phone is connected to the Internet, typically your broadband router, or in larger offices, connected to the office network.
When you place a call, your phone sends it's request over the Internet to our voice servers, which then route that call for you. When the call is connected, your speech is turned into a digital signal by your handset and sent to and from our servers over the Internet.
When you are called by someone, the call is routed to our servers through a variety of carriers that we connect with. Our servers then route the call on to your phone or phones over the Internet in much the same way as we do when you make a call.
In some circumstances, you might forward or divert your number to a landline or mobile phone, rather than a VoIP phone. In this case, we forward the call in a very similar way to the way you might receive a traditional telephone call.

Most people have heard of Voice over IP
Voice over IP (VoIP) lets people make telephone calls via the internet. VoIP converts the voice signal from an ordinary telephone into a digital signal, which travels over the internet, and then converts it back. With our VoIP service customers can make and receive calls UK and worldwide through the internet.
